Operation, Cleaning and Calibration of Conductivity

Operation Cleaning and Calibration of Conductivity

1.0 OBJECTIVE
1.1 To lay down a procedure for Operation, Cleaning and Calibration of Conductivity Meter.

2.0 SCOPE

2.1. This procedure is applicable for Operation, Cleaning and Calibration of Conductivity Meter in Quality Control Department

3.0 RESPONSIBILITY

3.1 QC Officer or QC Executive
4.0 ACCOUNTABILITY
4.1 QC Manager

5.0 PROCEDURE
5.1 Clean outer surface of the instrument by clean dry, lint free cotton cloth and clean electrode by purified water.

5.2 Ensure that instrument is daily calibrated and find correct cell value.

5.3 Switch “ON” the main power supply and then instrument respectively.

5.4 Set the FUNCTION knob to CHECK position and adjust the display to 1.000 with CAL CONTROL knob if require. Always set FUNCTION switch on CHECK position for stand by.

5.5 Set the FUNCTION knob to CELL CONSTANT position and adjust the display to calibration reading with CAL CONTROL knob if require.

5.6 Adjust require temperature with TEMPEARTURE knob. This is used to compensate for the change in conductivity due to variation in temperature.

5.7 Wash the conductivity cell thoroughly purified water.

5.8 After thorough cleaning immerse cell in the sample.

5.9 Move RANGE knob to require range of reading.

5.10 Move FUNCTION knob to MAN position and allow to stabilize reading. At this position the display read the
conductivity of the solution with manual temperature compensation.

5.11 Wash the conductivity cell thoroughly with distilled water and then immerse cell in distilled water.

5.2 CALIBRATION
5.2.1 Before starting calibration makes sure that the instrument is in the correct measurement mode.
5.2.2 Wash the electrode with purified water and after and before use and store it dry.
5.2.3 Change the buffer after one week or when required, and record the details.
5.2.4 Perform the calibration using a standard buffer of 1413 µs.
5.2.5 Press the mode key to select conductivity mode the conductivity indicator appears in the upper right hand corner of the display.
5.2.6 Rinse the electrode thoroughly with purified water or a rinsing solution do not wipe the probe this causes electrostatic charge on the glass surface.
5.2.7 Dip the electrode into the calibration buffer, the end of the probe must be completely immersed into the sample.
5.2.8 Press CAL/MEAS key to enter conductivity calibration mode. The CAL indicator will be shown. The primary display will show the measured reading while the smaller secondary display will indicate the conductivity standard buffer solution.
5.2.9 Press ENTER key to confirm calibration. The meter is now calibrated to the current buffer.
5.2.10 Rinse the electrode with purified water or a rinse solution and store it dry.

5.3 SAFETY AND PRECAUTIONS

5.3.1 Keep the conductivity electrode clean, the electrode twice, and gently swirl it while you take readings.

5.3.2 Keep the instrument away from areas of high humidity (greater than 80%) and temperature below 5°C and above 40°C.

5.3.3 Avoid spilling liquid on the instrument, wipe off the splashed liquid immediately.

5.3.4 Do not attempt to make any adjustments, replacements or repairs to the instrument.

5.3.5 Never use the instrument, when it is out of calibration or under maintenance.
