Preparation and standardization of 0.1 M ceric ammonium sulphate solution

Preparation and standardization of 0.1 M ceric ammonium sulphate solution

1. Preparation:
Weigh accurately about 65g of ceric ammonium sulphate and dissolve, with the aid of gentle heat, in a mixture

of 30ml of sulphuric acid and 500ml of purified water. Cool, filter the solution, if turbid, and dilute to 1000ml with the purified water.
OR
As per requirement (consumption history) prepare suitable amount of volumetric solution accordingly.
2. Standardization:
Weigh and transfer accurately about 0.2g of Sodium Oxalate previously dried at 105oC for 1 hour, to a 250 ml conical flask.

Dissolve in 100 ml water, add 2 ml of Sulphuric Acid, mix well, add 10 ml of hydrochloric acid, mix well and heat to about 75°.

Titrate with 0.1 M Ceric Ammonium Sulphate until the solution becomes faintly yellow.
Each ml of 0.1M Ceric ammonium sulphate is equivalent to 0.0067g of Na2C2O4.

Determine the molarity in triplicate and calculate the average value where the variation is not more than 0.2%.

This solution must be standardized frequently every 15 days.

3. Validity: 1 Month from the date of preparation and Re-Standardisation after15 days and when required.

(if not used within 15 days solution has to be standardized again just before use.)

4. Precaution – Check the physical appearance and fungal growth, sedimentation or change in color.

5. Storage : Store in glass bottles having well fitted, suitable stoppers.
