operation and calibration of muffle furnace
1.0 Purpose
1.1 To describe a procedure for operation and calibration of Muffle Furnace.
2.0 Scope
2.1 This procedure is applicable for operation and calibration of Muffle Furnace located
in Quality Control laboratory at ABC Pvt. Ltd., Roorkee (UK), India.
3.0 Responsibility
Officer QC/ Executive QC Preparation of SOP and follow the procedure as per SOP
Assistant Manager Reviewing and Training of SOP
Manager QC Implementation of SOP
4.0 Accountability
4.1 Manager Quality Control is accountable for implementation and compliance with SOP.
5.0 Procedure
5.1 Operation
5.1.1 Ensure that the Instrument is connected to the power supply.
5.1.2 Switch “ON” the main power supply, glowing of red light at mains indicates the power supply.
5.1.3 Switch on the instrument by ON position which leads to activation of
green control bulb and the temperature controller.
5.1.4 Set the desired temperature (0.0 to 1200) by pressing the ‘Set’ keys provided
at the right bottom front of the Electronic Controller and use ▼▲ keys to increase
or decrease the set value of temperature.
5.1.5 When temperature reaches at the setting point, the green light of temperature
controller automatically switched “OFF” and red light will glow.
5.1.6 The instrument is now ready for operation.
5.1.7 After completion of analysis, pressing the MAINS key OFF the instrument stop.
5.2 Calibration (Frequency: Once a year)
5.2.1 Calibration of temperature controller and temperature mapping of muffle furnace can
be done through external agency from Calibration Service laboratory.
5.2.2 Quality Control-Manager or his designee informs the defect to Maintenance Department
service engineer to rectify the defect. Affix ‘Under Maintenance’ label on the instrument.
5.3 Precaution
5.3.1 Ensure that furnace chamber should be empty when not in use.
5.3.2 Always use longhand tong for placing and removing the crucible in chamber.
5.3.3 Any type of organic solvent should not keep near the instrument.
5.3.4 Before operation of the Muffle Furnace ensures that the input power supply voltage
is 440 V AC. There phase check the display on the volt meter.
5.3.5 If, when connected correctly to the mains, the displays are not lit by pressing
the main switch, check the fuse.
5.3.6 Take suitable precautions to avoid electrical shock by providing proper earthling.
5.4 Cleaning
5.4.1 Do not use any kind of dissolvent and hard brushes.
5.4.2 Use wet cloth and finally wipe with dry cloths to clean the body of the Muffle Furness
