General Test Procedure Distillation Range

1. Purpose
   1. This procedure is applicable to all incoming Raw materials, In-process and Finished products.
   2. The distillation range of a liquid is the temperature interval, corrected to a pressure of 101.3 k Pawithin which the liquid, or a specified  fraction of the liquid.
2. Apparatus
   1. Distillation Range of 200ml capacity
   2. Condenser
   3. 100 ml graduated measuring cylinder
   4. specific gravity bottle
   5. Calibrated glass thermometer
3. Reagents
   1. None
4. Procedure
   1. Transfer an accurately measured 100ml of sample to flask of distillation assembly; add a few pieces of glass beads. Place measuring cylinder at the outlet of receiver attached to condenser of distillation assembly.
   2. Start heating the liquid using heating mantle / water bath, record the temperature when first drop of distillate falls into measuring cylinder, adjust the heating rate to obtain a regular distillation rate of 2- 3 ml per minute.
   3. Record the temperature at which whole or the prescribed fraction of the liquid has distilled.

            Note: For boiling range determination record the temperature from first drop of distillate falls into the

                          measuring cylinder to the 95% volume distilled.
