General Test Procedure 0.1M Ammonium Thiocyanate

 

• Purpose
  • This procedure is applicable for the preparation and standardization of 0.1M Ammonium thiocyanate.

  • 1000 ml Volumetric Flask
  • 250 ml conical flask
• Reagents
  • Ammonium thiocyanate
  • Silver nitrate
  • Nitric acid
  • Ferric ammonium Sulphate solution
• Procedure
  • Molecular Formula : NH₄SCN
  • Molecular weight :  12
  • Dissolve 7.612 g of Ammonium thiocyanate in sufficient water & dilute to 1000ml with water.
  • Standardize the solution in following manner :-

Pipette 30.0 ml of 0.1M silver nitrate into a glass-stoppered flask, dilute with 50 ml of water, add 2

ml of nitric acid and 2 ml of ferric ammonium sulphate solution and titrate with the ammonium

thiocyanate solution to the first appearance of a red-brown color. Each ml of 0.1M silver nitrate is

equivalent 0.007612 g of NH₄SCN.

• Expiry period of the solution: 15 days from the date of preparation.

V      = Volume consumed of 0.1M Ammonium thiocyanate solution.

M      = Actual Molarity of 0.1M Silver Nitrate solution

W      = Weight of the Ammonium thiocyanate used to make solution in 1000ml
