General Test Procedure 0.1M Ethanolic Sodium Hydroxide

 

  • Purpose
    • This procedure is applicable for the preparation and standardization of 0.1M Ethanolic Sodium Hydroxide solution.

    • Sodium Hydroxide
    • Benzoic acid
    • Phenolphthalein
    • Ethanol
  • Procedure
    • Molecular Formula : Sodium Hydroxide
    • Molecular weight :  40
    • Dissolve 4.2g of sodium hydroxide in 5.0ml of water and sufficient aldehyde-free ethanol to produce 1000ml. Allow the solution to stand in tightly closed container for 24 hours. Standardize the solution in following manner.
    • Weigh accurately about 600 mg of benzoic acid and dissolve in mixture of 30ml of ethanol (95%) and 6ml of water. Titrate with ethanolic sodium hydroxide solution, using 0.2ml of phenolphthalein solution as indicator. Each ml of 0.1M ethanolic sodium hydroxide is equivalent to 12.21 mg of Benzoic acid (C7H6O2). Store protected from light and moisture.
    • Expiry period of the solution: 15 days from the date of preparation.
