General Test Procedure Sulphated ash

 

1. purpose
   1. This procedure is applicable to all incoming Raw materials.
2. Apparatus
   1. Muffle furnace
   2. Balance
   3. Silica or Platinum or porcelain or quartz crucibles
   4. Graduated pipette1 ml
   5. Hot plate
   6. Desiccator
   7. Nickel tongue
3. Reagents
   1. Sulphuric acid
4. Procedure
   1. Keep crucible in muffle furnace at temperature 800° ± 25°C for 30 minutes.
   2. Take out and keep it in a desiccators, allow it to cool for 15 minutes, weigh it and record the weight of

empty crucible.

1. 3. Unless otherwise specified, weigh accurately crucible + sample (about 1g) and record the weight.
   4. First heat the substance gently on the Bunsen burner till the material gets charred. Cool, moisten the

residue with 1ml of sulphuric acid. Keep the crucible in muffle furnace maintained at 800°C ± 25°C

until all black particles disappear.

1. 5. Take out the crucible and keep it in a desiccators, allow it to cool to room temperature for 15 minutes,

weigh it and record the weight.

1. 6. Again keep the crucible in muffle for 30 minutes, remove and keep in desiccators, allow it to cool for

15 minutes. Record the weight.

1. 7. If the difference between two successive weighing is more than 0.5 mg, repeat step vi until the

difference of last two consecutive weight is less than 0.5 mg. Record the final weight.

1. 8. Calculate the Sulphated Ash by formula:
