5.0 Procedure
5.1 Cleaning agents
5.1.1 Preparation of 2% Teepol: Measure and transfer 10 ml of Teepol liquid in to 500 ml volumetric flask,
make up to the mark with purified water with intermediate shakings. Then transfer into a suitable volume can.
5.1.2 10% Nitric acid: Measure and transfer 10ml of Nitric acid in to 100ml volumetric flask, make up to
the mark with purified water with intermediate shakings. Then transfer into a suitable volume can.
5.1.3 Chromic acid solution: Dissolve 200g of sodium dichromate in 100 ml of purified water in a two liter
hard borosilicate glass beaker. Slowly and cautiously add sulfuric acid 1500ml by stirring. Cool to room
temperature and transfer to a glass Stoppard bottle.
5.2 Glass ware Cleaning for routine
5.2.1 Keep the used or contaminated glass apparatus in a plastic tray and send them to washing area.
5.2.2 Rinse each glass ware with potable water, and transfer them to sufficient capacity plastic area.
5.2.3 Measure and transfer potable water in to plastic tray that is sufficient able to dip all glass ware.
5.2.4 Measure and transfer Teepol in to the tray to produce 2 % in potable water.
5.2.5 Note: Prepare required quantity of cleaning solution in the same ratio given above.
5.2.6 Dip the glass apparatus in cleaning solution.
5.2.7 Soak all glass apparatus for about 1 hour in cleaning solution and take them out. Put back cleaning
solution retained in the glassware.
5.2.8 Volumetric flasks, conical flasks, measuring cylinders and test tubes: Take potable water upto half
of the capacity, shake more than 5 times and discard.
5.2.9 Pipettes & burettes: Take potable water upto half of the capacity and rinse them by inverting and
shaking more than 5 times. Rinse with potable water for 4 more times.
5.2.10 Other glass apparatus shall be cleaned with nylon brush. Rinse for 5 times with potable water by
taking potable water upto half of the capacity each time.
5.2.11 Finally rinse all the glass apparatus twice with small amount of purified water.
5.2.12 After final rinse with purified water, put them in a clean and dry plastic/SS tray.
5.2.13 Dry the glassware in Hot Air Oven at 60oC for 1 hour. After the Drying period is over allow the glassware
to cool and use it.
5.3 Glass ware Cleaning for un-removable residues.
5.3.1 Continue the point number 5.3.8 for the glass ware which ever having un-removable residues inside.
5.3.2 Fill the glass apparatus with chromic acid solution, and keep it idle for 20 minutes, if required keep
it in sonicator till residues are dissolved.
5.3.3 Further follow the point number 5.3.10 to 5.3.14.
5.4 Precautions:
5.4.1 Wear safety goggles and gloves at the time of preparation and use of chromic acid cleaning mixture.
5.4.2 Chromic acid cleaning mixture is extremely corrosive and hygroscopic and should be stored in glass stopper
bottles in a safe place.
5.4.3 When the mixture acquires a green color, discard the mixture by diluting several times with water.
