sop for preparation and standardization 0.1M Disodium Edetate

sop for preparation and standardization 0.1M Disodium Edetate

1. Preparation:
Weigh accurately about 37.2g of disodium edetate and transfer to a 1000ml volumetric flask. Dissolve in sufficient purified water and make up to the mark with purified water.
OR
As per requirement (consumption history) prepare suitable amount of volumetric solution accordingly.
2. Standardization:
Weigh accurately about 0.1g of calcium carbonate and transfer to a conical flask Dissolve in 3ml of dilute hydrochloric acid and 10ml of purified water. Boil for 10 minutes, cool, dilute to 50ml with purified water. Add few drops of Erichrom Black T indicator and Titrate with 0.1M disodium edetate till end point. Note down the volume of disodium edetate solution consumed during titration. Repeat the procedure two more times. Calculate the molarity of the solution by below given formula.
Each ml of 0.1M disodium edetate is equivalent to 0.010009 g of CaCO3

W = Weight (in g) of calcium carbonate.
V = Volume (in ml) of disodium edetate solution consumed.

Method 2: Weigh accurately about 0.8g granulated zinc, dissolve by gentle warming in 12ml of dilute hydrochloric acid and 0.1ml of bromine water. Boil to remove excess bromine, cool and sufficient water to produce 200.0ml. Pipette 20ml of the resulting solution into a flask and nearly neutralize with 2M sodium hydroxide. Dilute to about 150ml with water, add sufficient ammonia buffer pH 10.0 to dissolve the precipitate and add 5ml in excess. Add 50mg of mordant black II mixture and titrate with the disodium edetate solution until the solution truns green.

Each ml of 0.05M disodium edetate is equivalent to 0.00654g of Zn.

Determine the molarity in triplicate and calculate the average value where the variation is not more than 0.2%. This solution must be standardized frequently every 15 days.

3. Validity: 1 Month from the date of preparation and Re-Standardisation after15 days and when required. (if not used within 15 days solution has to be standardized again just before use.)

4. Precaution – Check the physical appearance and fungal growth, sedimentation or change in color.

5. Storage : Store in glass bottles having well fitted, suitable stoppers.
