OP first aid and safety aspects

 

1.0 Purpose
1.1 To Describe a Procedure to ensure first aid and safety aspect in the work spot.

2.0 Scope
2.1 This SOP is applicable for first aid and safety aspect while carrying out critical

operations/handling chemicals at at ABC  Pvt. Ltd.

3.0 Responsibility
3.1 HR Officer/Executive to ensure first aid and safety aspect in the work spot

4.0 Accountability
4.1 Head of Personnel and Administration is accountable for the Compliance of this SOP.

5.0 Procedure:
5.1 The first aid box shall have the following items:- Antiseptic solution – Dettol / Savlon,

Analgesic, antipyretic drug-tablet, Scissors, Cotton roll, Band- aid, Self adhesive plaster, Bandage roll, ointment, etc.
5.1.1 If any personnel in the company have met with any accident, he/she shall be treated with the first aid items.
5.1.2 If the injured personnel need further medical examination, he/she shall be taken to the hospital (nearest).
5.1.3 In case of any emergency, the personal department shall contact the above-mentioned

hospital and arrange for an Ambulance..

5.1.4 First Aid procedure:
5.1.4.1 Handling of unconscious person:
• Provide Artificial Respiration
5.1.4.2 Handling of cuts & scratches:
• Wash the wound carefully with water.
• Swab the wound with the cotton wool gently.
• Apply savlon/dettol with the help of cotton wool.
• Apply dressing with bandage cloth and adhesive tape
5.1.4.3 Handling of burns:
• Flush the affected area with clean cold water.
• For burns caused by acids, wash the affected area with the solution of dilute sodium bicarbonate solution.
• For burns caused by alkali, wash the affected area with clean cold water. Wash with vinegar

solution prepared by equal proportion of water and acetic acid. Apply dressing.
5.1.4.4 Handling of electrical shock:
• Put OFF the main power supply immediately.
• Do not touch the person with bear hands.
• Pull him off the circuit with some dry articles like rubber, plastic or dry wooden stick (Which are non-conductors of electricity).
• The reliever shall stand on the dry board.
• Place the injured person on the dry surface in such way that his/her nose and mouth are free for breathing.
• Then promote artificial respiration.
• When the patient recovers normal breathing, a glass of water containing a teaspoon full of Sal volatile shall be given.
5.1.4.5 Gas poisoning:
• Get the victim into the fresh air quickly.
Poisoning caused due to acid or alkali:
• The victim shall be made to vomit.
• Treat the victim with more of water to dilute the Poison.
• If the poison is acid, treat with milk of magnesia or lime water.
• If the poison is alkali treat the victim with lime juice or vinegar in equal proportion of water.
• Obtain medical attention from nearest hospital.
5.1.4.6 Other poisoning:
• If the victim is conscious give him a supersaturated salt solution or warm water containing mustard powder.
• If a burning sensation in the stomach occurs victim can be treated with cold-water, white yolk of egg or milk.
• Obtain medical attention from nearest hospital.
5.1.4.7 Artificial respiration:
• Positioning of the head.
• Lay down the victim on his back
• Tilt the head towards back.
• Inflation: Close the nostrils with your finger and place your lips around the victim’s mouth to

hold tightly and blow in the air at a rate of 15-20 times per minute.
• Exhalation: When the casualty’s chest rises, the operator removes his mouth and turns his head

to one side to allow air to escape from the casualty’s lungs. The inflation exhalation cycle is

repeated continuously at a ratio not exceeding 10-12 breaths per minute, until there are signs of returning natural respiration.
5.1.4.8 Safety:
• Buildings, machinery, vehicles, equipment, etc. shall be kept in a good status of repair.
• Fire preventive measures as well as action steps in case of fire shall be in place.
• The dangers associated with electricity shall be highlighted.
• The nature of work or material shall determine the level of personnel protection (mask, gloves safety shoes, etc.).
• First aid equipment and medicine shall be available and accessible for the treatment of injured

person. Qualified first aid personnel shall be available.
• Training shall be conducted for the awareness of handling of equipments and hazardous materials.
5.1.4.9 Safety Precaution:
• All the critical equipment shall be operated ONLY by the trained and skilled personnel.
• Any electrical operation shall be done by the trained maintenance personnel.
• Machine shall be disconnected from the electrical supply prior to cleaning.
• Do not use water/wet mop to clean the electrical panels. Use only a dry non-shredding cloth for cleaning.
• Do not stand below the lifting devices.
• Do not touch the hot machine parts bare handedly.
• Follow correct gowning procedure to enter the production department, to avoid the adverse

effect of the drug on to the skin.
• Clean any spillage immediately.
• Do not operate the machines with their safety guards open.
• Use emergency exits whenever there is an accident.
• Handle solvents in a properly ventilated area and store away from the electrical panels in

tightly closed containers.
• Ensure that there are duly filled fire extinguishers in the work place.
• Whenever there is a fire accident, identify the type of fire and operate the fire extinguisher

as per the following procedure.
