1.0 OBJECTIVE :
1.1 To lay down a procedure for cleaning and sanitization of raw water and soft water storage tank.
2.0. SCOPE :
2.1 This procedure is applicable to all the raw water and soft water storage tanks situated at abc company.
3.0. RESPONSIBILITY :
3.1 Operator Engineering Department shall be responsible for cleaning and Sanitization of raw water and soft water storage tanks and maintaining the cleaning records.
3.2 Officer/Executive Engineering Department shall be responsible to verify the proper cleaning and sanitization of raw water and soft water storage tanks.
4.0. ACCOUNTABILITY :
4.1 Head Engineering Department shall be accountable for compliance of SOP.
5.0. PROCEDURE :
5.1 CLEANING & SANITIZATION OF RAW WATER STORAGE TANKS.
5.1.1 Switch ‘OFF ’ the bore well pump.
5.1.2 Pump out the water fully from storage tank and ensure that the tank is empty for cleaning.
5.1.3 Open the manhole covers of the storage tank.
5.1.4 Ensure proper lighting and air circulation inside the storage tank.
5.1.5 Allow persons to enter into the tank after they clean their hands and feet.
5.1.6 Keep a flexible connection pipe of fresh water for cleaning purpose.
5.1.7 Clean the walls and floor with wire brush and cleaned cloth.
5.1.8 Flush the tank walls and floor with fresh water for 10 minutes, drain out/ pump out the wastewater from the tank.
5.1.9 Apply 4% v/v Sodium Hypochlorite Solution (commercial grade) on the wall surface and floor of the tank.
5.1.10 Keep it for half an hour and then flush with fresh water and pump out the waste water.
5.1.11 Continue the flushing for 10 minutes.
5.1.12 After flushing, test the rinse water for residual chlorine(limit- Nil) and pH shall between 5-7.
5.1.13 If residual chlorine and pH of the sample is same as fresh water, stop the rinsing and allow the persons to come out the tank and close the manhole covers. If it is not as fresh water, continue the rinsing till obtain same quality.
5.1.14 After ensuring the quality, collect the fresh water in storage tank by switch ON the bore well pumps.
5.1.15 Frequency of cleaning: 1,20000 liter tank half yearly.
5000 liter tank monthly.
5.1.16 Maintain the cleaning record in Annex-I.
5.2 CLEANING & SANITIZATION OF SOFT WATER STORAGE TANK
5.2.1 Drain out the water fully from storage tank and ensure that the tank is empty for cleaning.
5.2.2 Open the manhole covers of the storage tank.
5.2.3 Allow persons to enter into the tank after they clean their hands and feet.
5.2.4 Keep a flexible connection of fresh water for cleaning purpose.
5.2.5 Clean the walls and floor with nylon brush and cleaned cloth.
5.2.6 Flush the tank with fresh water for 10 minutes, drain out/ pump out the wastewater from the tank.
5.2.7 Apply 4% v/v Sodium Hypochlorite Solution (commercial grade) on the wall surface and floor of the tank.
5.2.8 Keep it for half an hour and then flush with fresh water and drain out/ pump out the wastewater.
5.2.9 Continue the flushing for 10 minutes.
5.2.10 After flushing, test the rinse water for residual chlorine and pH.
5.2.11 If residual chlorine and pH of the sample is same as fresh water, stop the rinsing and allow the persons to come out the tank and close the manhole covers. If it is not as fresh water, continue the rinsing till obtain same quality.
5.2.12 After ensuring the quality, collect the Soft water in storage tank.
5.2.13 Frequency of cleaning monthly in annex and maintain the record of cleaning in Annex – II
5.3 Check the residual chlorine by chlorine testing kit as per SOP.
