1.0 Objective
To lay down guidelines of procedure for Fire Extinguisher.
2.0 Scope
This procedure is applicable for the operation of Fire extinguisher at abc company.

5.0 Procedure
5.1 Maintenance of fire fighting equipments
5.1.1 Install right type of fire fighting equipments at various positions in the factory premises
depending upon the nature of fire that can erupt in that area.
5.1.2 Train the personnel for handling of various types of fire fighting equipments and
their names should be made known to all.
5.1.3 Clean these fire fighting equipments weekly with damp mop.
5.1.4 Instructions written on fire fighting equipments should be clearly legible.
5.1.5 Department personnel should be well versed with the operating instruction
about fire fighting equipments in their areas.
5.1.6 Get the equipment serviced and checked every year by competent person and enter the
details in the maintenance record of the equipments.
5.1.7 Check the equipment for any damage, corrosion, leakage, damaged gaskets etc. as well
as for nozzles, vent holes, gland nut, hoses etc.
5.1.8 Clean and grease all threaded components.
5.1.9 Check the level of contents wherever possible with the help of indicator.
5.1.10 Always keep ready sand bucket painted in red, and filled with sand. These should be labeled
as ‘Fire Bucket’ and kept hanged at the locations indicated in the chart.
5.1.11 Type of Extinguisher & Use:
TYPE OF EXTINGUISHER TO BE USED IN FIRES FROM
ABC Wood, Paper, fuel oil, LPG and electrical fires.
BC Oil, petroleum and electrical fires.
Carbon Dioxide – CO2 Electrical Source : Short Circuit, Bus Bars, Switches etc.
Chemical Dry Powder Electrical Sources, Solvents Such As Alcohol, Ether, Kerosene, Acetone Etc.
5.2 Operation
5.2.1 ABC type of fire extinguisher
5.2.1.1 Fire extinguisher of class ABC is suitable for use on wood, paper, fuel oil, LPG and electrical fires.
5.2.1.2 Remove the fire extinguisher from its holder and place on the floor.
5.2.1.3 Remove the safety pin provided at the top.
5.2.1.4 Lift the extinguisher, press the control lever and aim the discharge at the base of the fire in a rapid sweeping motion.
5.2.2 BC and water carbon dioxide gas type of extinguisher
5.2.2.1 Fire extinguisher of class BC is suitable for use on oil, petroleum and electrical fires.
5.2.2.2 Remove the fire extinguisher from its holder and place it on the floor.
5.2.2.3 Strike the knob which is on top of the extinguisher with hand.
5.2.2.4 Lift the extinguisher and direct the jet towards the base of the flames with a rapid sweeping motion.
5.2.3 Carbon dioxide type of fire extinguisher
5.2.3.1 Carbon dioxide class of fire extinguisher is suitable for use on oil, petroleum and electrical fires.
5.2.3.2 Remove the fire extinguisher from its holder and place on the floor.
5.2.3.3 Remove the safety pin provided at the top of the extinguisher and turn the knob in anti-clockwise direction.
5.2.3.4 Hold the discharge tube in one hand and direct it at the base of the fire.
5.2.4 Soda acid type of fire extinguisher
5.2.4.1 Soda acid class of fire extinguisher is suitable for use on wood, paper, cloth and plastic fires.
5.2.4.2 Remove the fire extinguisher from its holder and place on the floor.
5.2.4.3 Remove the plunger guard from the knob on the top of the extinguisher.
5.2.4.4 Invert the extinguisher and strike the knob on a hand surface or floor
5.3 In case of a fire in any section the person sporting the fire shall immediately inform the department
heads and other person in area.
5.4 The person sporting the fire shall try to extinguish the fire by using the fire extinguisher provided.
5.5 The type of fire extinguisher to be used shall depend on the nature of the source of fire.
5.6 Records of maintenance of firefighting equipment and training shall be maintained by the individual
departments responsible for the activity.
5.7 In case of electric fire the personnel shall be cut the electric supply and no personnel shall use
water for fire combating. The personnel shall use red colored bucket full of sand to control the fire.
The red colored buckets are hanging in front of the plant premises.
5.8 The personnel shall use the fire extinguisher cylinder for fire combating. The personnel shall
hang down the fire cylinder and straight its pipe put the cylinder on ground and breaks the seal
of the cylinder. After breaking the seal move the cylinder up and down for three or four times. After
that straight its pipe Push the liver of the cylinder. The product which is coming out from the cylinder,
give direction that product towards fire
