sop for Testing of Hardness of Soft Water
To lay down a procedure for the Testing of Hardness of Soft Water.
This Standard Operating Procedure is applicable for Testing of Hardness of Soft Water to be followed at formulation plants
3.1 Officer / Executive Engineering shall be responsible for the execution of this procedure.
3.2 Engineering Manager shall be responsible for the implementation of this SOP.
3.3 Head QA/designee shall be responsible for the compliance of this SOP.
4.0 Abbreviations and Definitions
SOP : Standard Operating Procedure etc
No : Number
NA : Not Applicable
QA : Quality assurance
Sr. No. : Serial number
TH : Total hardness
Ml : Milliliter
Ppm : parts per million
ER : Engineering
5.1 Hardness of water shall be checked by hardness testing kit.
5.2 Take 25 ml of water to be tested in a test jar.
5.3 Add one spoonful of TH1 provided in the hardness testing kit.
5.4 Mix the contents well to dissolve.
5.5 Add 20 – 25 drops of TH 2 provided in the hardness testing kit and mix contents well.
5.6 If the colour turns blue, it indicates there is “NO HARDNESS” in the water.
5.7 If the colour turns RED, it indicates there is Hardness.
5.8 Now drop wise add TH3 from the hardness kit, counting the number of drops while mixing, until the colour changes from RED to BLUE.
5.9 If the expected hardness of the test sample is more than 40 ppm, then use TH4 instead of TH3.
5.10 The hardness hence is to be calculated as:
Total hardness ppm CaCO3 = 2x (No. of drops of TH3) = 5x (No. of drops of TH4)
